ARTISTIC STATEMENT From Tosin Morohunfola

As a storyteller, I gravitate towards narratives about empathy and humanity – especially in the face of institutional opposition. My favorite genre is a Suspense Drama or Thriller that challenges the mind and one’s principles. I always search for advocacy for the marginalized in my films as well. My mission is to educate and affirm with my entertainment. My first festival- selected film On Sight—a social justice police thriller—speaks to that proclivity. So does my upcoming feature, “The Pulpit” (2027).

As a Nigerian-American… who came up in the Evangelical traditions… of the rural Midwest…, I have a lot of “conflicting allegiances” (to say the least). So, when I’m not making hard-hitting exposé dramas, I pursue personal yet universal stories about family, identity and belonging. My romcom pilot “Single A.F.”, about a 2nd Generation Nigerian with pushy, traditional parents forcing him to get married, is just that: a farcical meditation on who I’m supposed to be versus who I want to be.  My hour-long drama series “Small Chops” is a more serious look at family that epitomizes the immigrant experience and the dangers that come along with it.

Lastly, my short film “Endowed—a parable about a father’s faith and fears for his child—is both a call-to-action and an expression of my belief in our collective potential: that we can each be a hero. Every one of us, human heroes in the face of adversity. I hope to always make art that inspires us to become our best selves… together.
